Cienfuegos

This "modern" colonial city was founded in 1819 by French families under the command of Don Luis De Cloudet and its original name was San Fernandina de Jagua, in honor of the Spanish King Fernando VII and the aboriginal roots of the area.

Known as the Pearl of the South, the city is rich in architecture with a marked French influence and a very modern urban design for its time: large parks, avenues and wide easy-to-navigate streets.

Well worth a visit if you travel east on the way to Trinidad.
